Pokémon Unbound supports full multiplayer link-play features due to its advanced Complete FireRed Upgrade (CFRU) engine. However, because the game uses heavily modified clock interrupt handlers, multiplayer linking requires precise emulator timing adjustments to prevent de-synchronization or black screen errors.
1. mGBA PC Local & Remote Connection Guide
Connecting two game instances on mGBA Standalone PC requires the local multi-window feature. Use the following sequence to map inputs and run concurrent threads:
- Step 1: Open Second Window: Launch your main game. Go to the menu bar, select File, and click New multiplayer window. Load the same patched Pokémon Unbound v2.1.1.1 ROM on the second window.
- Step 2: Map Controller Inputs: Go to Tools -> Settings -> Controllers. Player 1 should be bound to a physical gamepad, while Player 2 must be mapped to either a keyboard or a secondary gamepad to avoid key conflicts.
- Step 3: Background Emulation: In both windows, navigate to Emulation and ensure that Pause when inactive is unchecked. This allows both windows to process game threads simultaneously when one window loses focus.
- Step 4: Remote Setup: If playing with a friend over the internet, the host should run both windows locally, and the guest should connect using Parsec to bind inputs to the secondary window.
2. RetroArch gpSP Core Netplay Configuration
Due to clock timing issues in the RetroArch mGBA core, players wishing to connect via Netplay must utilize the gpSP core. Both devices must run identical ROM versions on the same local network.
- Step 1: Core Setup: Open the Quick Menu, select Core Options, navigate to Link Cable Connectivity, and select GBA Wireless Adapter on both devices.
- Step 2: Host Initiation: Navigate to the Netplay tab in the Main Menu, turn Use Relay Server to OFF, and select Start Netplay Host.
- Step 3: Client Join: On the secondary device, navigate to the Netplay tab and select Refresh Netplay LAN Host to find the server. Once joined, restart the emulation to align game frames, then navigate to any Pokémon Center 2F to trade.
3. Mobile Multi-Device Link (Android MyBoy! & iOS Options)
On Android, MyBoy! Pro handles Link Play seamlessly. For single-device self-trading, tap the menu button, select Link Local, load the second save, and talk to the rightmost NPC in the Pokémon Center. Use Switch Game to alternate controls. For separate devices, use Link Remote over Bluetooth or Local Wi-Fi.
For iOS users, the standard Delta emulator lacks native GBA link-cable emulation. To bypass this, players must use Linking Boy, which features dedicated OTA local network GBA Link emulation, or export their saves to Unbound Cloud to swap Pokémon.
4. Battle Frontier Co-op Match Alignment
To challenge the Seaport Battle Frontier tag-team battles with a friend, boot both matched ROM instances, open the link connection, and speak with the Co-op NPC. Player 1 selects Multiplayer -> 2P, and Player 2 accepts the prompt. Ensure Fast-Forward is strictly disabled during match rendering to prevent de-sync errors.
